Hair grows 1-1.25 cm (0.4-0.5 in) a month — every return interval below is that number divided into a style.
Colour needs renewing every 4-8 weeks because new hair grows in without pigment. At 1-1.25 cm of growth a month, four weeks puts about half a centimetre of natural root on show; eight weeks puts a full centimetre. Where you sit in the window depends on your base: roots on a previously lightened base take colour faster and fade sooner than virgin hair, so lightened hair belongs at the 4-week end.
Cuts run on the same clock with different tolerances. A fringe needs cutting every 4-6 weeks because a centimetre of growth is a large share of a short length; a longer cut can absorb the same growth for 8-10 weeks before the shape goes.

A perm or smoothing finish follows chemistry rather than scissors. A keratin or smooth finish holds a blow-dry for 3-4 months — but washing with sulfates strips it in about three washes at 12-15 °C water temperature, so the real interval is set as much by your shampoo bottle as by the calendar.
Nails run on a slower clock entirely. A full fingernail grows out in 4-6 months and a toenail in 9-18 months, which is what sets how often a gel or shell manicure needs redoing: the polish does not wear off the schedule, it grows off it.
One return visit is medical rather than cosmetic. Head lice live 7-10 days on the head, so a second treatment 7-10 days after the first is needed to kill eggs that had not hatched the first time.
