How Long Each Salon Service Takes

Block 90-150 minutes for a full-head colour and half a day for balayage or keratin — here is where every minute goes.

A full-head colour takes 90-150 minutes, and the range is not vagueness — it is four timed stages stacked together. Lifting takes 20-30 minutes, developing takes 30, processing takes 15-45, and then the hair is rinsed, toned and dried. The range exists because processing alone can run from 15 to 45 minutes depending on the depth wanted.

Balayage and other freehand lightening take 2.5-3.5 hours. The lightener is painted on by hand, section by section, which is slower than an all-over application; development and toning still have to happen afterwards. Book it as a morning or an afternoon, not as an appointment between appointments.

A keratin or smoothing treatment takes 2-4 hours, and that figure already includes the wash, the treatment itself and a 10-15 minute blow-dry at the end. What you spend in hours up front, the finish repays for 3-4 months — that is how long it holds a blow-dry if it is not stripped.

Two checks sit around the chemistry and stretch the calendar rather than the clock. A PPD patch test has to be on the skin 48 hours before any colour, so a first colour is never a same-day decision. And before lightener goes on the whole head, a strand test on a 5 x 5 cm (2 x 2 in) section is checked every 10 minutes, because hair lifts unevenly from root to ends.

The practical sum: a colour with a cut needs the colour's 90-150 minutes plus the cut; balayage or keratin each want a clear half-day. When you book, say whether your hair is virgin or previously lightened — a lightened base takes colour faster and fades sooner, which changes both the timing and the rebooking interval. For the intervals themselves, see How Often to Come Back for Root, Trim and Perm; for what to do afterwards, see Caring for Colour and Smooth Hair in the First 48 Hours.
