Colour has to be renewed every 4-8 weeks because new hair grows in without pigment. At 1-1.25 cm of growth a month, four weeks gives roughly a centimetre of visible root and eight weeks gives two and a half. Roots on a previously lightened base take colour faster and fade sooner than virgin hair, so they sit at the short end of the window.
Cuts follow the same growth rate with different tolerances. A fringe needs cutting every 4-6 weeks because a single centimetre of growth puts it in the eyes. A longer cut distributes the same growth over more length and holds its shape for 8-10 weeks.
A perm obeys the same arithmetic as colour: new hair arrives at 1-1.25 cm a month untreated, so the treated lengths and the new growth diverge from the first week. The refresh decision follows the same root-growth logic as a colour touch-up — watch the first 4-8 weeks of new growth rather than the calendar year.

A keratin or smooth finish is the long cycle: it holds a blow-dry for 3-4 months. The interval is not fixed, though, because washing with sulfates strips the finish in about three washes at 12-15 °C water temperature. Two people with the same treatment can be three months apart on the return date.
Nails set their own schedule. A full fingernail grows out in 4-6 months and a toenail in 9-18 months, and that growth rate is what decides how often a gel or shell manicure needs redoing as bare nail emerges at the base.
